SCARRED (James Lorimer, 2007)

ScarredBecky was once a promising skating star, but these days she feels numb, disconnected, and very lonely. The only way she knows how to relieve pressure is to cut herself. Now a gifted girl she coaches seems to be skating down a similar path.

Will Becky have the strength to help her young friend and face her own past?

--“What I love about this novel is the tight writing. It’s a short book and every word counts. Even as the reader is repulsed by Becky’s actions, they do make sense in a world without choices. I also like the fact that Monique has worked into the story a way to self-heal. This book is … a great read.” – Brantford Expositor

--"Scarred breaks new ground as a novel about self-injury.... Given the obvious dangers with this shockingly common destructive behavior, society at large and schools in particular must directly address this issue. Scarred is a good place to start.... The novel's brevity does not compromise the believability of the characters or the conflict." -- Resource Links

Hi Ashlee, Hi Carissa, I'm so glad you girls found my book Scarred to be meaningful. Of all my books, this may be the one that is most helpful to young people. Hope you are both doing well and taking good care of yourselves. For me, writing is a way to take care of myself. Perhaps it'll work for you, too. Best wishes from me

Hi Brianna, Glad that you enjoyed my book. Hope you didn't find it too disturbing. I am very concerned about kids who cut -- I'm hoping my book will give them hope that recovery is possible. Thanks again for your note. I love hearing from readers!

Hey Monique,
At school, we are reading your book. It's really interesting but when we finished it, I was disapointed thhat you didn't write more.

How come you didn't add anything at the end? I would have liked to find out: if Beck ended up talking to Dr. Seawell, how Aarol got on with his carpentry class and if Becky's mom stopped picking on her.

Also, did Aarol cut himself? It would make sense if he did because then he would have recognised the signs of Becky spending lots of time in her room and her wearing long sleeves in the summer and also because he builds things.

Hi Isabelle and Ashley, Now I'm wondering whether you two go to the same school! Glad to know you are reading my book and that you're able to "picture" it, Ashley. Isabelle, you will find the answers to all the questions you have about Becky if you keep reading carefully. Good luck with your assignment. Here's hoping you get an A!

I think it's great that someone is willing to write a book about self-injury because the more people know and understand about it, the less often it will happen. So, thanks for letting people know about this! smilies/smiley.gif

Hey Vicky R and Amanda, Thanks for posting your comments on my blog. Vicky, I'm glad that reading Scarred doesn't feel like a chore to you. That means I must've done a decent job writing it! And Amanda, I'm glad you think it's important to let people know about self-injury. When I first started doing the research for the book, I thought maybe I should keep the whole topic more of a secret, but I learned that not talking about self-injury only makes the problem worse. So in a little way, I tried to open up the conversation about a difficult topic. Good luck with your book reports and thanks for writing. Happy 13th birthday soon, Vicky. My b-day is coming up soon, too! best to both of you from Monique
